Best known as a sideman to some of rock’s greatest artists (Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young), Nils Lofgren is an accomplished solo artist in his own right with a professional career that started in 1969 at age 17. In the 90’s Nils experienced a commercial and critical renaissance with the album “Silver Lining”, which includes the Top 40 hit “Valentine”, featuring Bruce Springsteen. Nils subsequently appeared on the Tonite Show, David Letterman, MTV. His critically-acclaimed follow-up “Crooked Line” was named by Pete Townsend as one of his favorite albums of the year in Rolling Stone. Nils has continued making distinctive solo albums; this collection includes highlights from 1990 on, including rarities and live tracks.

Las artes tradicionales siempre cuentan con una serie de obras representativas de cada área, que trascienden gustos personales o escuelas estilísticas. Ejemplos pueden ser La Gioconda en pintura, la 9ª Sinfonía en música o El Quijote en literatura. Incluso el cine tiene su Ciudadano Kane, pero, ¿que ocurre con el cómic, el arte secuencial?. Aunque existe un puñado de obras clasificadas como clásicos imprescindibles (Little Nemo, Las aventuras de Tintín o Akira), ni siquiera todos los críticos tienen una postura unánima en cuanto a la trascendencia de las mismas. El arte del comic aún no posee mitos, siendo casi tan antiguo como el propio cine. Las razones, que pueden ser por su escasa formalización, su heterogeneidad o su nefasta imagen popular, son digna de un estudio profundo, que no tiene lugar aquí.
Sin embargo, si fuésemos a buscar una obra que, en mayor o menor medida, sea clasificada como genial por cualquier crítico que la conozca, ya sea un fanático del cómic norteamericano, europeo u oriental, ésta podría ser Watchmen, de Alan Moore y Dave Gibbons, publicado a mediados de los 80 por la editorial DC Comics.
Watchmen en una historia sobre superhéroes, y se basa en ellos para retratar, analizar y criticar sin piedad la sociedad occidental contemporánea, e incluso el sistema político-social en el que se circunscribe. Watchmen, en sí mismo, no es más que un tebeo, con sus viñetas y sus bocadillos, pero también es una joya irrepetible e imperecedera, como cualquier clásico literario. En definitiva, así como alguien dejó claro una vez porqué debemos leer a los clásicos, este artículo intenta recordar porqué debemos leer Watchmen.
